Over 7 months ago, the Oak Ridge BOE decided to look into different scheduling options as a means to reduce operational costs. They tasked the administration to look into alternatives to the current mixed structure (2 of our 8 schools operate year round while the other 6 operate on a traditional schedule.) The administration did as they routinely do – delayed in providing direct answers. And, apparently, the BOE is o.k. with that, as you can see by the co-chair’s response to this string. Notice how this went from being about what the BOE was requesting to what I was requesting?

Mr. Eby,
I understand that there will be a special work session tomorrow night to discuss the implications of a year round schedule for all OR schools. Have approximate total operating costs (not necessarily “savings” figures) already been provided to the board for each of these scenarios:
· Year round schedule for all OR schools
· Traditional schedule for all OR schools
If not, will a deadline be established by the board for the administration to provide both of those figures before discussions on the matter proceed further?
Regards,
Trina Baughn

Thank you for your questions. Tomorrow night’s meeting is to set the parameters on any study the Board would do and directions we would give the Superintendent about the information we would need to be able to make an informed decision in the future. No information has been provided to the Board yet. The questions you ask are just two of the questions that need to be answered before an informed decision can be made. If the Board so determines, we will ask the Superintendent to come back to us with the answer to these and many other questions. Thank you. Hopefully this helps you.

Thanks, Bob. Did the board determine to request these figures of the superintendent?

Yes, we asked the Superintendent to provide data on cost for several options as well as educational benefits. Looks like it will be May before we get any results back.

Mr. Eby,
Please let me know at the conclusion of your meeting this week the approximate total operating costs (not necessarily “savings” figures) for each of these scenarios:
· Year round schedule for all OR schools
· Traditional schedule for all OR schools (as opposed to the current mixed operating structure)

The purpose of today’s meeting is to determine if there is enough interest to continue the discussions. I do not know if any cost information will be forthcoming or not. There is some data on the cost impact to other school systems, but I don’t know if any data will be provided on what you are requesting of the cost to OR schools.

Thanks, Bob. It sounds like, even though the initial impetus for this exploration was cost-driven, 7 months after the board tasked the superintendent to “provide data on cost for several options as well as educational benefits” you have no cost data.
